A-Z of Drugs and Quit DVD

A-Z of Drugs and Quit DVD

Publisher: 4 Learning / Espresso Education

Curriculum Connections: Supports PSHE/PSD courses and health care courses, physical and emotional health, responsibility for oneself and for others, encourages informed decisions about drugs and smoking, encourages a healthy, safe lifestyle. The A-Z of Drugs: the aim of this series is to inform, to disentangle myths from reality. It’s a fast moving, stylish, no nonsense guide through the minefield of drugs. The programmes give facts, information and viewpoints in a language young people understand. Upfront and honest, these programmes tackle drugs head on, delivering clear facts with strong messages, empowering young people to make informed choices for themselves. 3 x 25 minute programmes, titles:

1. A to E Covers A to E, starting with alcohol and ending with ecstasy.
2. F to O this programme starts with F for friends, it moves on to look at heroin and injecting, then explores making choices and needing to fit in.
3. P to Z Includes a look at treatment and some of the reasons why people take drugs.

Quit. Quit is a series of campaigning films. Short and sharp, Quit has one aim: to discourage and stop young people from smoking. Strong, visually alluring and attention grabbing, these clever pieces will appeal to teenagers’ vanity, their sense of social injustice and their sense of humour whilst presenting the medical facts about nicotine dependency.

5 x 25 minute programmes, titles:
1. A Hole in My Neck: Few people realise that smoking can cause tongue and throat cancer. This film looks at the consequences of smoking and follows an operation to remove a smoker’s tongue.
2. Family Habit: Teenage smokers are under the impression that it’s easy to give up, they could do it any time if they wanted to. Not true. It’s as hard for them to give up as it is for their mum or dad with a 20 year habit. We set a challenge, can a teenager AND their mum give up?
3. Greg’s Story: Greg is sixteen. He dreams of being a top tennis player. He goes to school, has a younger sister and a dog. He’s just like anyone else his age, except that when he was 11 he found out that he had cancer. Greg’s utter disbelief that anyone would choose to risk going through what he has experienced first hand is a powerful reminder that life is full of hidden dangers, and that some risks jus aren’t worth taking.
4. Breath of Fresh Air: Every year the tobacco companies need to recruit 450,000 new smokers to replace those lost through illness and death, and these new smokers need to by young. This film juxtaposes cigarette commercials and testimonials from tobacco industry executives with the experience of someone who fell for their marketing strategies, Alex, a man who now talks through a stoma hole in his neck after smoking gave him cancer.
5. Dog End: An animation about passive smoking. Trying to hide his fags from his parents, a teenage boy subjects the family dog to his illicit smoke. Dog End uses black humour to explore the issue of passive smoking and the damage it inflicts.

Drugs & Alcohol: The Issues DVD

Publisher: 4 Learning / Espresso Education
Drugs & Alcohol: The Issues takes a frank, unflinching look at the social and medical impacts of recreational drug and alcohol consumption in today's Britain. The programmes on this DVD aim to answer the question 'Why do people use drugs and drink alcohol?' They address issues such as the social, 'fun' aspects of drinking , the 'highs and lows' involved in taking drugs, psychological and physiological effects, the reasons for users' initial attraction to addictive substances, attitudes to personal risk and peer pressure. The DVD also investigates addiction not only its damaging consequences for addicts and their families but also how individuals can beat addiction with appropriate care and support. Some of the addictive substances covered in these programmes are legal, such as alcohol and prescription drugs. However, they also investigate a range of illegal recreational drugs including cannabis, ecstasy, cocaine, heroin and speed. Booze: A Young Person's Guide is a documentary which was filmed during the course of one Saturday night, in six locations in England and Tenerife. The six drinking stories show the different attitudes that exist towards alcohol among many young British people today. Britain's Deadliest Addictions looks at three people who are addicts, each with one thing in common - they are dependent on drugs or alcohol to get them through every day. The three patients spend five days at a treatment centre and work with experts to tackle their problems. Drugs: The Lowdown on Getting High takes an honest look at the ups and downs of using cannabis, ecstasy, speed or cocaine. The film aims to tell the 14-16 age group what they need to know about the drugs that they are most likely to encounter. Wasted looks at the impacts of drug use on individuals, families and society. This is a hard-hitting and at times disturbing insight into how drug use can ruin lives, although there are also the stories of those who have overcome addiction to get their lives back on track. WARNING: 'Wasted' contains some strong language and scenes of drug injecting. Programmes contained on this 2 DVD set: Disk 1 - Booze: A Young Persons Guide - 1 x 50-minute programme; Britain's Deadliest Addictions - 5 x 25-minute programmes: 1. Day 1 at the Clinic, 2. Suicide is the second most common cause of death among Britons under 35. Yet a lot can be done to stop things reaching such desperate and tragic ends. This programme challenges the stigma of owning up to mental health problems. It profiles three attractive, successful young people who have suffered and conquered mental illness. Their deeply moving stories prove that having a mental health problem isn’t the end of the world, and can even lead to personal growth.

(3) WITHOUT YOU: Explores the experiences of young people whose lives have been affected by bereavement. The documentary focuses on portraits of young people in very different circumstances, and traces the individual ways they have come to terms with grief and loss, and gained the strength to face the future.
