Short and sharp, Quit has one aim: to discourage and stop young people from smoking. Its as hard for them to give up as it is for their mum or dad with a 20 year habit. We set a challenge, can a teenager AND their mum give up? 3. Gregs Story: Greg is sixteen. He dreams of being a top tennis player. He goes to school, has a younger sister and a dog. Hes just like anyone else his age, except that when he was 11 he found out that he had cancer. Breath of Fresh Air: Every year the tobacco companies need to recruit 450,000 new smokers to replace those lost through illness and death, and these new smokers need to by young. This film juxtaposes cigarette commercials and testimonials from tobacco industry executives with the experience of someone who fell for their marketing strategies, Alex, a man who now talks through a stoma hole in his neck after smoking gave him cancer. 5. Dog End: An animation about passive smoking. Trying to hide his fags from his parents, a teenage boy subjects the family dog to his illicit smoke. Drugs & Alcohol: The Issues
Publisher: 4 Learning / Espresso Education Drugs & Alcohol: The Issues takes a frank, unflinching look at the social and medical impacts of recreational drug and alcohol consumption in today's Britain. The programmes on this DVD aim to answer the question 'Why do people use drugs and drink alcohol?' They address issues such as the social, 'fun' aspects of drinking , the 'highs and lows' involved in taking drugs, psychological and physiological effects, the reasons for users' initial attraction to addictive substances, attitudes to personal risk and peer pressure. The DVD also investigates addiction not only its damaging consequences for addicts and their families but also how individuals can beat addiction with appropriate care and support. Some of the addictive substances covered in these programmes are legal, such as alcohol and prescription drugs. However, they also investigate a range of illegal recreational drugs including cannabis, ecstasy, cocaine, heroin and speed. Booze: A Young Person's Guide is a documentary which was filmed during the course of one Saturday night, in six locations in England and Tenerife. The six drinking stories show the different attitudes that exist towards alcohol among many young British people today. Britain's Deadliest Addictions looks at three people who are addicts, each with one thing in common - they are dependent on drugs or alcohol to get them through every day. The three patients spend five days at a treatment centre and work with experts to tackle their problems. Drugs: The Lowdown on Getting High takes an honest look at the ups and downs of using cannabis, ecstasy, speed or cocaine. The film aims to tell the 14-16 age group what they need to know about the drugs that they are most likely to encounter. Wasted looks at the impacts of drug use on individuals, families and society. This is a hard-hitting and at times disturbing insight into how drug use can ruin lives, although there are also the stories of those who have overcome addiction to get their lives back on track. Taking its audience on the first steps of a journey towards understanding stress and anxiety, depression and disorder, self harm, suicide and despair, Losing It is designed to help young people and those working with them to: identify the factors that affect mental health, understand what mental health is and distinguish it from mental illness, overcome the fear and stigma associated with mental illness, develop confidence, self esteem and emotional literacy. Losing It is supported by a Science on Stage and Screen Award from The Welcome Trust. WINNING THE MIND GAME: Mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety are increasingly prevalent among young people in the UK. At their most extreme, they can kill. Suicide is the second most common cause of death among Britons under 35. Yet a lot can be done to stop things reaching such desperate and tragic ends. Their deeply moving stories prove that having a mental health problem isnt the end of the world, and can even lead to personal growth. WITHOUT YOU: Explores the experiences of young people whose lives have been affected by bereavement. The documentary focuses on portraits of young people in very different circumstances, and traces the individual ways they have come to terms with grief and loss, and gained the strength to face the future.
