Publisher: 4 Learning / Espresso Education

Curriculum Connections: Different types of music, the composition process, the structures within the music making process, performance and listening tasks, composition in a variety of musical traditions.

PITCH FEVER contains x 5 20 minute programmes. In this series of programmes, students are asked to create original pieces of music that take them into contrasting musical contexts, a pop song, music for an advertisement and a film, a modern classical piece and some African music. Work on initial ideas is followed by a visit to a professional musician for advice. Titles: 1. The Pop Song (Units 1,10). 2. The Advert (Units 1,10). 3. The Scottish Symphony (Units 1,14). 4. The Film Score (Units 1,13). 5. The Festival (Units 1,5).

REWIND contains 5 x 20 minute programmes that provide a model for the different ways in which composition is approached in a variety of genres: dance music, popular song, jazz, contemporary classical and electro acoustic music. Each programme starts with a performance, which is then compared with a full studio recording of the same piece. We then ‘rewind’ the creative process back through mixing and recording decisions, to rehearsal, orchestration and the original composition. Presented by Courtney Pine. Titles: 1. Chart Hits, The Corrs, DJ Luck and MC Neat. 2. Mixing, Jocelyn Pook, Talvin Singh and Angika. 3. Jazz, Courtney Pine, Django Bates. 4. Classical, Wajahat Khan and the medici Quartet, Steve Martland. 5. Stage and Screen, Howard Goodall, Debbie Wiseman.
